Start by reading the site, not the catalogue

Most real schemes combine two or three ranges. A coastal promenade might take INOX for the exposed frontage and ECO for a sheltered inland pocket.

Layout, spacing and why the safety area drives the site plan

Every station has two footprints. The equipment size is the physical envelope. The safety area is the larger zone around it that must stay clear of obstructions and be finished in appropriate surfacing. It is the safety area, not the equipment size, that determines how many stations fit on your plot, and it is the number specifiers most often forget to add up.

Specify falls and drainage alongside, because a surface that ponds will fail early.

Match materials and coatings to the environment

The single biggest driver of whole-life cost in outdoor fitness equipment is corrosion, and corrosion is a function of the local atmosphere rather than the product brochure. EN ISO 12944 classifies atmospheric corrosivity into categories, and the coastal and marine categories such as C5-M are a different duty to a sheltered inland park. Specify the corrosivity category in the tender and require the supplier to state the protective system they offer against it.

Ask about coatings on user-contact surfaces as well. EN 71-3 addresses the migration of certain elements from coatings, and REACH governs chemicals used in the EU market. A supplier should be able to explain what evidence they hold.

A serious supplier can hand over a per-station data pack before you place an order. Insist on it, because these documents let your landscape architect draw the scheme and let your inspector sign it off later.

  1. Equipment size for the physical envelope, so the drawing is accurate.
  2. Safety area dimensions per station, so the plan can be tested for capacity.
  3. Age group, so provision matches the intended users and any play adjacency is handled properly.
  4. Play capacity, which tells you whether the circuit can absorb a peak-time group.

Plan the lifecycle, not just the launch

Budget for inspection from day one. The sector inspection model, set out in EN 1176-7 for playground equipment and applied in practice alongside EN 16630, has three tiers: a routine visual check for obvious hazards, a more detailed operational inspection of wear and stability at longer intervals, and an annual main inspection covering structural condition, foundations and corrosion. Record every inspection, because an unrecorded inspection is, in any dispute, one that did not happen.

Plan for wear parts too. Bushes, bearings, grips, fasteners and moving joints need replacing long before the frames do, so confirm spare availability and lead times before you sign, and ask how the supplier handles a discontinued station five years in.

Procurement, installation and handover

A clean sequence keeps the project defensible.
